From the “Mikado” to a temple of drama
The story of the house on the corner of Khagani and Gogol streets — almost as old as the theatre itself.
1916The “Mikado” cinema, 1916
The building was erected in 1916 in an Eastern, “Chinese-Japanese” style. On 26 December the “Mikado” cinema opened here, and later it housed the “Pell-Mell” club-theatre.
1924The stage finds a home
In 1924 the theatre took over the building. The 1927–1928 reconstruction added tiers of boxes, a dress circle and some 400 new seats.
1964The look of the twentieth century
Between 1962 and 1964 the façades of the neighbouring buildings were unified into a single ensemble. The theatre became an unmistakable part of central Baku's architecture.
2008The revival of 2006–2008
A thorough restoration gave the auditorium modern equipment while preserving the building's historic soul.
